I use canned green beans with new potatoes. I add bacon grease, garlic salt, an onion and what ever seasonings you like an simmer at least an hour or so. Taste like old fashioned long cooked like mom made. DH does not like mushroom soup, so I do this.

Love those old fashoion beans Dix, I make something similar....saute kielbasa, onion, add beans and potatoes and cook till taters are done, serve in a bowl, it makes a great soupy broth, good for winter.

I add a little soy sauce to that mixture! My daughter loves it at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I am one who does like the green bean casserole...a classic served at Thanksgiving/Christmas time family gatherings...have to admit though I have never actually made it, just enjoy eating it...love the crispy French onions on top!

Glad to hear I wasn't the only one who disliked this casserole. To each their own, but its not on my list.

Not a particular fan of GB Casserole, but the grands seem to love it.

I like green bean casserole but have never made it. I may just have to go and buy me a couple of cans and fix it. Thanks. I imagine you bake it in the oven until its hot. I too grow my own green beans. Eat all I can and give away the rest.
Yum, makes me wish I had some now.

It's not Thanksgiving without green bean casserole! I think it might even be illegal.

I've made it with frozen French cut beans and it works out fine - I just have to cook it longer than with canned green beans. (I think the object is to remove any trace of bright healthy green and reduce the beans to a khaki colored mush - no healthy stuff allowed. )

If I'm making it on a day which isn't Thanksgiving (a day on which you should never tinker around with the recipes for old family favorites! LOL!) I add chopped cooked bacon.

Canned beans are good if you pour the whole can in pot and add a bit of olive oil and cook for an hour or so on med. low heat. My neighbor gave me this recipe and I have used it lots.
Sometimes I do add a bit of chicken bouilion to the pot. I love fresh green beans , this is just
an alternative that is also good when you do not have the fresh beans.
