I always wash my quilts so that the new owner doesn't think they've ruined the quilt when they wash it the first time.

I never wash the quilts when completed... I like the new look... but I always wash the materials before I start... it is a must...

I always wash them when completed. They can always rewash after they receive it.

    I agree with MadQuilter -

"Sorry, but I do not understand the idea of seams coming apart. Don't you check the seams when you sew the pieces together? "

I hardly ever prewash fabric - though some vintage pieces probably have been before I get them - and I never wash wall hangings. I do fluff them wish a damp towel and a dryer sheet. Baby quilts, lap quilts and bed quilts do get washed. We all love the crinklies! All that handquilting had better show to its best advantage!

Whether the quilt is for me or for someone else it goes right into the washer after the last stitch is in it. I use All Free and Clear and no fabric softner since that's the product I use for myself. I mark all over my quilts when piecing and quilting (unless I meander) so that has to come out. Like many others here I love the crinkley look too!

I don't. Washing is VERY hard on a quilt so one should ONLY wash it when it is absolutely necessary if you want it to outlast you !!

i too love the vintage look that washing makes. also the fact that my material hits the floor while i'm working on it.

I always wash my quilts beofre I give them, especially since I make many baby quilts & want to be sure all glues, sprays, etc out. And yesterday learned another reason why-I had machine embroided a label for the little girl, with her name, etc. Luckily I added the label after quilt finished & didn't quilt it in as I sometimes do. For the first time ever the thread I used for the wording on the label ran! Couldn't believe it but was glad it dye just stayed on the label & didn't get into the quilt which had white borders. I had to take off label & make new one.
