    Default Hello From Michigan

Hi All! I have decided to start to quilt so I am looking for tutorials, tips, help and just plain support. I was looking at the rulers today and whoa there is a wide variety. Which do you guys recommend? I have borrowed a rotary cutter and pad things, but forgot to borrow the ruler. I have a 50% off coupon for JoAnne and decided to buy my own.

    Hi, Kathleen7! Welcome, from TX!

If you have a Hobby Lobby near you, make sure you get their coupons, as well. You can print one from online (hobbylobby.com) or if you have a smart phone, use your browser and get one from mobile.hobbylobby.com. Right now, there's a 40% off coupon and you can use it once a day!

Rulers - Here's a ruler thread, which might help answer your question: http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...m-t187709.html

thank you for directing me to the link. I took notes! lol. We do not have a Hobby Lobby. I get to visit one maybe once a month or once every other month. We just have JoAnn and Michaels.

Welcome from a former Michigander. I started with a 6X24 ruler. and then bought a square later. I liked the ruler that has a lip on the end you can put against the cutting board and the ruler will always be squared on the board.
Where in Michigan? I grew up in Traverse City, spent my married life near Flint. Loving retirement in Utah. Dont miss the traffic or the winters. You will love this site.

Thank you for the kind welcomes. I am in Jackson Michigan, never lived anywhere else. I love the state of Michigan with all of the seasons and such. Although this winter has been weird. My oldest son and wife recently moved to League City which is south of Houston Texas. I have visited Texas before and wouldnt mind moving there. I am getting ready to head out to JoAnn's this morning.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. For just starting out I recommend a 6X24 ruler. This size allows me to cut across 45 inch material that is folded with the selvages together, that is if you have a mat big enough. You didn't say which size mat you borrowed so at least get a ruler the will allow you to cut all the way across your mat. The less you have to fold your fabric to cut, is better for a beginner. I started cutting with just 2 layers to get good at holding the ruler securely, cutting straight across the fabric with being VERY careful that my fingertips were not close to the edge.
