No carpet at all in this house...hard wood and ceramic tile! We have cats and it's easier to clean up after them than with carpet. I have rolling desk chairs at my computer desk and at my sewing machine, and have fun rolling all over my studio on my hardwood floor!

I have a cork floor...it has a look of wood but has some cushion to it. I really like it!

I had hardwood put in and just love it. There is one small -- very small-- negative I found. I have rollers on my sewing chair and my computer chair and I wound up with a small rug under the sewing chair because I tended to slide backwards as I used the footpedal. Pins are a danger in our house. My dh is diabetic and has neuropathy in his feet and legs. In short, he can't feel if he steps on and gets a pin embedded in his feet. It's really easy to get the pins swept up when I'm done, but I don't do as well with a vacuum where the pins may get twisted in the carpet's fibers.

Since the carpet came with the house, presumably you don't know what's under the carpet. There may not be a wood floor under there, but plywood, and you would have to put down a floor. In any event, how do you like your
wood floor? If it's perfectly okay for you, get the wood floor. If you're unhappy with it, get carpet. I like the
feel of carpet under my feet because I have a tendency to take my shoes off. A suggestion might be a wood floor and an area rug. I have a wood floor and an area rug, and I like it a lot. I don't see that it makes a difference as far as sewing is concerned, only cleaning up. I don't find a difference between seeing items on the floor on the wood floor and the carpet. I see them both equally well. My point is whatever is comfortable for you is what you should get.

I used to have carpet and HATED it (for all the reasons stated above). I now have laminate and LOVE it!! It's not only easy to clean and find "escapee" pins, it's great for rolling my chair from my work table to my computer.
