I love this one. I fill the bottom third with rice (uncooked, you won't believe how many ask that and yes that is a dumb question) . I have small ones and big door stop ones! They will not roll or tip over.

I made it simple and more useful for me. I don't add a tie, I use a big safety pin to hold the two ends together and fill that pin with other safety pins.

A friend made me a pincushion that has proven to be my best friend. She took a straight sided teacup (2 1/2 to3" tall and around), took pieces of 100% wool and rolled them very, very tight. Pushed them into the cup and voila, instant pincushion. It works perfect for my longer pins as well as the shorter pins. The wool keeps the pins sharp and I can always find the cup on the sewing table.

Thanks to all who weighed in so far. I have tried the magnet route and my arthritis really prefers that the pins be sticking up as pulling them off the magnet is not as effortless somehow. I think I may try QuiltNama's teacup idea as I have a stray small mug and some wool scraps that should work for this project. But I hate to stop my quilting long enough to make one.

What I had hoped for is a really FABULOUS flat pin cushion I could order already made. Then if I liked it, I could just order three or four! Anyone know a source where I can purchase the quilter's dream pin cushion?

Was going to be my response, too. I've got the 4" and the 6". Wouldn't trade them for anything.

And it's heavy enough that it sits well on the arm of my recliner, too.

Thanks for the tip, BUT I have five machines and none of them are computerised. They are oldies but goodies, and nothing short of armagedon can ruin them.

Is this what you were talking about Vondae? It looks very easy to make. I have one kind of like it that, but the top looks like a flower. I did not make mine, I won it at a retreat. Pincushion Thread Catcher

I have one of these also and I love it, I got mine at the local auto supply store and I think I paid abt $6. BTW, Tashana, I love your avatar - what a cutie.

I made some square pin cushions for Christmas that were very simple. I did as the pattern advised to fill with crushed walnut shells. The filling provides a good weight to the item. I can't remember where I got the pattern on line but was a frequented site. The filling you can buy at pet store or pet department of store.

My DGD's husband said computers are not affected by magnets anymore. They are made differently than older ones. That's what he said. He is a mechanical engineer.
