Mine is in the middle of the room, against the back of a couch.

I like it there ... great lighting, I can see the TV, I can look out the window.
I have sewn facing the wall, and hated it as I felt too closed in.
In this home, I have the luxury of space and can do this, whereas I know many can not even consider this positioning because of minimal space.

It works for me, though it would not work for a lot of people.

You have to do what works for you!

My sewing table is in the middle of the room because of wall space...it's filled up with storage. I do have one machine that sits in front of a window looking out to my backyard. With my main sewing table in the middle of the room I am facing the doorway and DH can't sneek up on me and some lighting is from the overhead light. Also when quilting it is easier to add a small table to the back to help support the weight of a quilt.

Mine is against the wall and shelves above but I have a large window I can get a lot of light in the afternoon. The window gets a lot of morning sun but the blinds are shut during that time. Therefore it doesn't affect the fabric stash.

Mine is in the middle of the room, too... I can swivel and/or roll my chair (hardwood floor) to reach the desk behind me (filled with stuff I use) or the small ironing board (an old tv tray with a June Taylor cutting board/ironing surface on top)...
I'm facing the tv and the door... lots of natural light but have to partially close the blinds depending on what time of day it is...
I USED to sew and quilt in the dining room... and that was in the middle of the room too!! ha ha.. (sorry, couldn't resist!)

Mine is in the middle, I find working with large pieces or quilting large quilts I can butt the ironing board or fold up table against the sewing table to take the weight of the quilt easier, less pull on the fabric and easier to maneuver.

We have a large great room. My machine is behind the couch where I can look over the shoulder of the DH,look out the window, see the TV. My cutting table is at an angle to my right. I like to be in the same room as my spousal unit,so I can supervise him!LOL. The good housekeeping folks would likely not approve.

My machine is in the middle of the room. There is a design wall behind me and quilts in progress, a bag I put stuff in to carry to the finished basement where I store my fabric, books and batting.
