That quilt teacher was a snob and a self-appointed purist!:evil:
That same teacher probably turned her backings to the front for bindings, used only polyester fabrics or blends, used larger than 1/4" seams, cut *everything* by template, and wasn't choosy about her thread, at one point in her quilting life. All of which she, if being the same snob now, would probably deny ever doing. What a joke. The end result justifies the means, however we do it!

A quilt is 3 layers "sewn" together to create one covering.....whether it's with a "quilting stitch" by hand, or by machine, or by individually sewn ties is irrelevant. Visualize yourself putting that teacher's words on a message in a bottle and throwing it out to sea!

I'd do some basic SID down your seam lines to hold everything in place and to reduce any possibility of shifting after repeated washes. Then add all the ties you want. I tied quilts for my kids when they were little and I found that some of the ties did pull out or eventually tear the fabric. The embroidery floss worked better I think because it wasn't as thick as the Sayelle (4 ply yarn) I first used before I knew better. It's a really cute quilt that will be treasured for years.

I've used crochet thread for tying before (works great...easier than tying with embroidery floss). Someone here showed some kind of tie that looked somewhat like chicken tracks....it was so cute. Also if you tie, use a surgeon's knot....it will stay tied.

Look up surgeon's knot on internet...it will show you how to do it. Also search turkey track on this site and you will find how to do that.

I have just found this precious quilt and HAD to tell you it is so cute! I want to get the pattern and make one now for my greatniece... Your quilt is the cutest one made in this pattern I've ever seen! Adorable.
