My vote is for 505 but have not tried the new either. I will give it a try when I need to buy a new can.

I really like the Dritz spray they sell at Joanns. No odor or very little. I can't handle anything with a strong odor because of health concerns. Never ever had a problem with this spray. Use your 50% coupon to get it cheaper.

I haven't used Elmer's glue for basting, but for those who wish it would dry faster -- have you tried ironing it? I think if you are not using big blobs of lines of it that ironing would make it dry much faster. I use tiny bits of Elmer's glue on my bindings and always iron immediately to get it to stick. I think my only concern with ironing Elmer's for basting would be that I would want to make sure that the glue is spread out thinly, not in thick globs or lines. Of course, ironing would only work for primarily cotton battings (80/20 should be okay); polyester battings could melt under the heat of an iron.

I've used Sullivan's. It's in the pink can. The smell is awful, and the first time, I ended up with overspray everywhere. So,I would suggest using it outside or over carpeting. But it works. I've left projects unfinished for months and come back and it's still stuck together.

Me too! It is a larger can than the small 505 and I have excellent results with it. I did not find that it left a "cloud". It does have an odor but nothing offensive. I do spray in doors.

You don't have to wait for the Elmer's School Glue to dry. You can iron it dry, if you're in a hurry. When I started using Elmer's, I'd go over the entire quilt, pressing section by section. It dried easily enough but it's just so much easier, to leave it overnight.

When I use Elmer's for the binding, I always iron/press it dry. Only takes a few seconds, per section.

I use Elmers Glue, or any brand of Washable School Glue. The drying time doesn't bother me. Just use thin lines and make sure it says Washable.
