What to do--my back-up sewing machine (the first electronic Singer) pooped out for me the other day. I don't use it often but I do like to have a back-up. Would you spend the money to get the old Singer fixed or simply purchase a cheap new one. I have looked at some of the cheaper machines and they appear to be about as cheap as they look.

I love my cheapie walmart brother as my backup, but thats me and thats all I sewed on for 10 years with no problems so love them despite their plastic and people commenting on them as horrible machines. They serve me well, they are consistent, reliable. I just love my brothers so much I should be their spokesperson for their new machines

I agree with Dolphyngryl - I have several vintage machines which I enjoy but my favorite it my basic mechanical Brother.

I have a walmart brother that I just love!!! Used it for years before upgrading to a TOL baby lock. I still use it as a class machine and back up.

I'd find out what it would take to get the old Singer fixed. They just aren't making sewing machines like that any more. If that failed, I'd keep my eyes open for an older model Janome, Bernina, Viking, or even a Juki. It's a buyer's market right now.

The other option is to upgrade what you have with a new machine, and use what you currently have as your back-up.

I love my cheap viking husqvarna .100. It is light and has a good selection of whistles and bells great for applique work.

I would find out what it would take to fix the old singer- chances are the fix will be much less than purchasing a new-cheap machine

If I was allowed to buy a new machine, I would buy a Bernette, $150 at our local store and light weight, you can take it to quilting groups and it is almost feather light. Good brand., However since I have back ups for my backups, I am afraid the DH will not be pleased if I came home with "One more machine". LOL

I love my Costco Brother. Not sure what it would cost to repair your Singer.

I would check to see what it would cost to fix your singer but chances are it will be close to what a new lower end machine would be. If that is the case I would think about how much did I like that machine or if I wanted to replace it.
