So, why does one have to cut it larger? What would happen if one didn't and quilted anyway. Thanks!

I recently finished one where I had actually cut the backing smaller by a smidge. I added a tiny sliver to make it bigger and when I didn't care for the look, I covered it up with the label. This will probably not help you but I would not be afraid to add a bit to each end to make it match. If it is small enough, you may be able to hide it with the binding.

That will still look intentional - and give you some wiggle room. I have always had some slippage with the backs, and the bigger the piece, the more "grace" I need.

Sometimes it can and does come out even. And sometimes it does not.

When a piece is sent out to be longarmed, different longarmers have different requirements.

My suggestion would be to add just in the center, that way if things shift any, it would be less noticeable.

I think you have come up with a great idea .... put the rose on a plain background fabric that you have used in the quilt and when deciding where to put it, allow for it to be on the bed top rather than on the side (assuming your bed runner is hanging over the edges of the bed. Bonus! ... you'll have a reversible runner!

Why not add a few strips of jelly roll to match at the sides.

I would also do some large piecing on the back to enlarge it. You will then have a pretty, reversible runner.

Good ideas. I'm not much help about things like this because I don't like to fuss with making something work. I put the miss cut piece back in my stash and buy more the size I need or use another piece for backing.
