I ordered two books from amazon.com on making sweatshirt jackets, included quilted ones too. I have made one jacket but it was not quilted. Dee

the easiest qilted jacket is the one done over a sweatshirt...cholhide has the patter and I think Connecting threads too

I have made a quilted jacket - I cut my pattern pieces much larger then quilted & then cut the jacket to fit. Use a very simple pattern and it will turn out great.

See if you can find anything from Nancy Zieman (Sewing With Nancy on PBS). Her original shows (30 yrs ago) were about garment making, but she has now included quilting, and combines both.

The method I have used is to make pieces of quilted fabric (strip pieced, various blocks, etc.) slightly larger than than each pattern piece, then lay the pattern on the quilted fabric and cut the pieces out. Then sew the pieces together. I then make a lining to hide the seams. One method I haven't tried, but have seen is to cut the pattern using the next larger size, and sew the pieces together like you would a rag quilt for a different look.

I make a lot of jackets and there are a number of patterns for them.It is the only time I wash my fabric nad I use flanalette for the batting, washed 2-3 times in HOT water to make sure the shrinkage is out of it . If not sure of what size make a sample from a cheap muslin or a old sheet. They are great to wear and can be to embellised to your hearts content with beads lace ribbon and charms Good Luck and have fun

I took a class for a jacket once. We figured out how much fabric we needed then quilted it with very light batting. Then we just cut it out and put it together. It really wasn't very hard. It turned out great and I am going to make some for gifts this coming year.

Before I started quilting a few years ago; I made a quilted winter coat. Just made the material in large enough sizes to cut out pattern and put it all together following the pattern.
(I had sewed for many years and made lots of regular coats, jackets, dresses, etc).
I used a light weight flannel to line it once I had the shell together.

Another time I made a jacket out of 2" strips. Made about 72 yards of strips and sewed them into one hugh piece after measuring pattern pieces - mostly the width. Then layed out pattern pieces and cut out as usual. It had long sleeves, and a collar.Large size. Lined it with solid cotton fabric.
Got so interested in this; that I turned to making quilts and since then have given up clothes sewing!! Hope this helps.

just finnish a quilted jacket.. i also need a large size so...i used a sweatshirt jacket...no hood... i cut it all part and used the jacket piece to add the quilting pieces and then sewed it back together and added a waiist band cuffs and collar..it was my first quilting expierence .patsy
