I have several of those guages. The older ones were all metal- even the moveable part. The newest one I have has a plastic moveable part that does not stay put! I agree the quality is not what it should be. So I tape it!

I was cleaning out some drawers in my sewing room and found six tracing wheels. Putting the older ones next to the newer ones and the difference in quality is very noticeable. My older ones are solid, turn perfectly straight with thick metal blade points. The newer ones were not worth keeping, look like flimsy toys. No wonder we all still have the older tools, they last.

That item is one of the things "required" for the Home Ec sewing class when I was in high school in the 50's. Still have mine. I agree. The new ones with the plastic center doesn't work as well as the old ones.

Are you talking about a hem gauge? Black, 6 " long with a slide and a thick end on one side that is 5/8" wide.

Indeed. I have mine, too. It is metal.

They are a seam or hem measurer. Look on Nancy's notions catalog for her green plastic one. I have one of the old blue ones but ordered one of hers and I love it.
