    Default Stiff Crosshatch Sample

Fortunately, I crosshatch quilted a sample about 16” square, because it did not turn out quite as I expected. I used a low loft cotton batting as the quilt is a reproduction 1800s red and green appliqué. I did 1/2” diagonal crosshatching with a walking foot, which I thought turned out very well.

I expected the crosshatching to stiffen the quilt a bit, but the finished square feels stiff to the touch with very little “give”and barely bends on its own.

Do you think a batting with more loft would soften the feel and drape of the quilt, or is this degree of stiffness to be expected with 1/2” crosshatching? I have not washed the sample yet since I planned to add appliqué on top of the quilting.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

The closer your stitched lines the stiffer your quilt will become. Try a sample with quilting 1 1/2 - 2" rows, also I feel the density of the batting will make a difference.

i agree with, Gay. I crosshatched the border on a quilt I think i used a 1 1/2" crosshatch and it wasn't stiff at all.

Oh, good point. I usually use Aurafil 50, Glide, Invisafil or other lightweight thread. Heavier weight thread would make it stiffer.
