I like this technique for quilt as you go better than any other. The youtube video is very good also.

This works for me, and I have made several quilts using this method. The piecing pattern has to be conducive to the design of having 1/2" connecting strips/sashing. With this method, you can quilt to the very edge of the block.

The "Lucky Stars" quilt and "Are We There Yet?" that I recently posted on the board and that are shown below were both made using this method. Lucky Stars has 12.5" blocks, and the other one is smaller.

For me "quilt as you go" makes the machine quilting manageable.

There are MANY ways to QAYG. Several members have posted tutorials on how to do it, their way. I have posted mine here:

If you are looking for a book, I recommend Marti Michell's book, Machine Quilting In Sections. She's the best.

I'm so glad this question is here because this is now a valuable source of information. I attended a one-day quilt workshop and we used QAYG to make a baby quilt but I can easily follow instructions with someone walking me through each step but not necessarily remember them later. We did not sash the quilt. I'm beginning to think this will be a good method for me to become familiar with if I want to make larger quilts in the future.

Hi Kathy,
The Lucky Stars pattern was from Fons and Porter, some time ago. This thread is from 2012. The name has changed since then to Wonky Stars or Crazy Stars. If you want directions on making the block there is a video by The Fabric Patch on how to do it:

you mean this Kaye Wood serger quilt as you go? I love Kaye Wood, grew up watching her and Georgia Bonesteel!

i love this method, it's from the 80s or 90s but I've made several quilts this way, all the way up to king size and they always turn out great
