That is the only applique technique that I use. I love hand work of any kind. I do repairs and restorations so I have to practice all the time with my stitches. Detail and tiny have always been my thing. The smaller the better. To me it's worth the time it takes to complete the project.

I also do NTA and absolutely love it. It IS time-consuming, tho. I've done machine applique for quick projects that go to "children" or other family members who I know will wash the quilt alot. Have 3 NTA at the LA...am going to enter them in DM show...will post them sometime this summer when I get them back. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE, like with anything else (along with a bit of patience) and you'll do just fine:) Have fun:)

I also love to teach this technique. It is something that takes a little practice but not hard to accomplish.
The basic applique stitch and getting nice curves and points is something I can teach in one class setting, but I warn you, once you master that, you will want to add to your skills by adding dimensional applique, smaller and smaller pieces, more detail, embroidery embellisment, and on and on it goes.

Some enjoy the process and the result. Others like to get to the result faster. I'm not too interested in books or pattterns that emphasize the speed of a project. Dont' care for great big blocks just to finish quicker. But for many busy women today, that's the way to go.
I hope that in the future these hand techniques don't die out.

I just taught myself how to needle turn applique because I saw a darling piggy I wanted to do for my great niece. I am now working on my second project and am enjoying it. I will continue to machine piece other quilts but will also occasionally do needle turn.
