The quilt is a lovely pattern and thanks for sharing the story behind it . Your quilting complimented the quilt very nicely. I do not think any one or group of people could do that much hand quilting.

One added note to this discussion. I'm sure back then if they'd had some of the machines we have today there would have been machine quilters too. Just to put a quilt on the old fashioned frames took so much more work than today. Most of us all use modern machines to make our lives easier and the whole process more enjoyable. I'm so glad that not only was it rescued and finished but now due to those efforts, it will be enjoyed by someone who loved the original creator of this quilt. That gift is priceless. Sometimes looking back on the good memories in our lives, especially about those who are long gone now, gives us a piece of mind and just a happy feeling inside. We all want to be remembered once we're gone, this will that happen. If there were a picture of the orginal creator, I'd try and put it on the label to honor as well. I wish I was this talented.

This quilting is incredible! The colors the original quilter used are beautiful and your quilting stepped it up to exquisite. I have hand pieced/quilted quilts my DGM did and they look nothing like this. I often fear that they will be donated after I am gone because they look old and tired. This one just got the high-end upgrade to gorgeous.

You did an absolutely fantastic job - I know that both she and her mother will be over the moon. Personally no matter what anyone else says - I say what ever gets it done and out of storage where it is more likely to get thrown away or lost

Truly a stunning quilt!.! You did a fabulous job quilting it! To answer your question, I dont see anything wrong with machine quilting an antique quilt. I think in some cases people have over quilted, but not in your case. Its beautiful.
