Welcome from the beautiful Northern Neck of Virginia

I'm still relatively new at this (less than a year) and have learned so much by following this board, participating in swaps and jumping into a project to get experience.

I agree with Teen - start by organizing the tools of your craft and commit to staying organized - I clean-up every time I turn the lights off so that I return to an organized and clean workspace.

I prefer to keep one or two projects active at a time but others here are very comfortable with lots of UFO's - I think it's a personal preference here.

Favorite tools? There are so many - the basic 'must haves' (cutting mat, rotary cutter, scissors, seam ripper (clover is my fav) and acrylic rulers (I'd start with 8"x24", 6 1/2" square and 12 1/2" square.

Never, ever skimp on thread, needles or bobbins! Close 2nd to the prior three items is to avoid cheap fabric.

Lastly, have fun! Enjoy the creativity and accomplishment we quilters thrive on and share pics of your journey!

Christine

Welcome! I agree with everyone. There is always great advice here on the QB. Watch YouTube tutorials, Jenny Dolan from Missouri Star Quilt Co is great. Also MSQC has a daily deal (one item each day 40-50% off). I receive an email to let me know what that deal is. I look for layer cakes I like. Shipping is only $5. Have fun!!

Welcome from East Oklahoma. My favorite tool is my own fingers. That might sound a bit silly, they do the most work. Cutting, stitching, pressing. All that stuff.

Welcome, Sherry,
My favorite "tool" is a 1973 Bernina 830! I regularly check the linens section of local thrift shops for good buys on fabric remnants and scraps.

Welcome from NY! I buy most of my fabric online since it usually works out to be less expensive.

Welcome. I’m new to the board but not entirely new to quilting. I love the table size cutting mat to go with the rotary cutter. You will need a big ruler to go with it. One thing I like that is not mentioned is a magnetic pin holder. When I put pins on a table it picks them up. Get the long pins with a visible head. I also like these plastic and metal clips that I use once the quilt gets big so I don’t get stabbed when handling. -Lee

Welcome aboard. Favorite tools: large cutting mat, rotary cutter, 5 x 24 inch ruler, featherweight machine, Gammill longarm machine.
