Those quarter square blocks make more things. Just make a few and try different ways of putting them together. Twisted ribbon and pyramid strips are the two I have used. Lay out blocks in a row with all the points facing the same way and you have the pyramids. Take every other block and flip it 180º and you have twisted ribbon.
Also, the large triangle is the background; the other two colors should coordinate.

Sorry, I said that wrong. It is one of the small triangles that is the background color if you want to make twisted ribbon or pyramids. I came back to this, realized my mistake, but it was too late to edit.

Gorgeous!!! That is one of the most beautiful patriotic quilts I have ever seen. You did a wonderful job on it and your friend is very lucky to receive such a gift.
