I go around it. I am working on a Quilt AS You Go quilt and then I have my embroidery machine do the quilting and then I put the applique or embroidery on. The quilting will not show on the back of the quilt but I am okay with that. The quilting will only be in the sashing.

I only quilt on an appliqué if I’m doing embellishments/ thread painting on it. Usually I echo quilt or do some sort of custom quilting to highlight the appliqué

I SITD around the applique. If it is large, I also quilt within it, but try to make the quilting complement the applique shape.

I sometimes quilt inside the applique if I want to emphasize something like the veins of a leaf or a "dimple" in a flower. I usually outline it first to make it puffy. If it's a larger piece, such as a vase or bowl, I quilt a design inside. There are no real rules - do what looks good to you. I like appliqued parts not to look baggy and for the whole piece to have a relatively uniform amount of quilting.

I go around the applique designs without quilting inside them unless it is a Sunbonnet Sue or Overall Sam. Then I want to highlight each piece of the design such as arms, hands, bonnet or shoes. This shows the entire design.

My applique is a bear it is like 10" at least I really want to quilt with longarm and do a pantograph do you think that will be a problem? This quilt is a baby quilt so it will probably get washed more,so it needs to be secure as possible.

I have quilted it both ways. I have echoed around the applique letting it puff up a little and I have just quilted thru the applique in an all over pattern. It still looks like applique when quilted down. In this way, I think it was sturdier to be used.

I go around appliqué. Sometimes I might add some detail quilting to the appliqué like leaf veins or other embellishments
