Default Wedding and other dresses in quilt: ideas?

A friend has a wedding dress ( not usable as a dress) and some other opera dresses from her mom that she’d like me to use in an art quilt. Any ideas of what to do with them?

saw a picture of an art quilt that had one "lady" in it that was dressed in a dress of many colors. Would something like that work?

When I think of “art” quilt, I am thinking of more abstract painting then traditional. You will probable be working with fabric with questionable fibre content so keep that in mind where choosing a pattern. A crazy quilt with embroidery was sometimes used in the antique quilts that were done to use up silks, satins, velvets etc.

I cut my wedding dress up and am in the process of making this wall hanging.
My dress is a pale pink, so I used a white background. If the dress you're working with is white, I think it would be really pretty to use a midnight blue background.
The pattern is called "The Dress" by Cherry Blossom Quilts.

Years ago at the Sisters quilt show, inside the clock store, there was a wonderful collection of quilts made from bridal gowns. I wish I could find the pictures I took of them. You might also look at Cindy Needham's quilts that use vintage linens, same sort of concept.

I saw a quilt once made of hankies that were all folded to look like dresses which were appliqued to a plain background. You might consider doing that with the dress fabric. Might be really special.
