I wash all fabric as that's what my first quilt teacher taught me. I don't wash batting but wash the quilt when it's finished. Small amount of shrinkage gives me the look I want.
I did wash a black wool batting once as it was recommended.

I usually do not wash... however, I washed my current project for a few reasons:

I used bright colored fabric that I have been collecting for 10+ years..

The bright fabrics will be sewn to a beautiful white on white.

I don't want a surprise after the quilt is finished.

Normally, I will wash after the quilt is finished. At that time I use color catchers.

I wash, prshrinks fabric and set dies .The quilt I am currently working on is made up of light pastels with burgandy mariners compass in center of block.I tested fabric[ burgandy] and it bled all over the place I probably would
have ruined my quilt if I hadn't pre washed.

If a fabric goes limp after washing - it probably wasn't all that wonderful anyway. (Unless soft is what one is wanting)

If one wants to use sizing or starch to stabilize a fabric for cutting - fine, I guess - but if one is using it to "beef up" a fabric - it will go floppy again the next time it's washed.

I wash a fabric to get it to be in it's more or less "natural" state -
then I have a very good idea of how it will be when it's "in use"

I agree with you. I think washing it after quilting brings out the beautiful patterns of the quilting.
