I made my hubby a quilt with worn BDU fabric and I have uniforms I collected in Afghanistan from all the services to make a quilt for a customer. The fabric is very durable and in my opinion easy to sew.

My nephew makes quilts out of military uniforms and accepts donations. You can contact him at [email protected] and ask if he would want one from WWII. He gives them to the veterans at the home near his in Sioux Falls SD. He is retired Air Force. He accepts uniforms from any service.

    Default Memory quilt using uniforms

I agree with others, save the uniforms intact until your son is older. I still have my dad's uniform from WWII and would never consider cutting into it!!! Here is a link to a quilt I made out of uniforms:

I made my husband a quilt from his fatigues (his were olive drab) when he retired. I used the front of his shirts with the patches and buttons still attached and put them in chronological order from all the places he had been stationed. I also used the pants to make blocks to fill in. It turned out really nice. I don't have a picture of it right now though.
