some women wear their hair with long looking curls now. they remind me of that dog with the long face and wavy hair on their ears. not complimentary at all.
i think they do it with curling irons though.

I remember my mom using rag strips to curl my natural curly hair to control it into actual long curls instead of the wild woman look of curls everywhere, but can't remember exactly how she did them. Too many years have passed since that time.

Pink sponge rollers for me also but my cousin had some pink rubber ones that you wound the hair around and the top rolled over the curl to lock it in. Really curly curls with those. I graduated to brush rollers pretty quickly and made mom stop doing my hair in those tight curls. She also tried to do pincurls on the sides and gave me Tonette perms! How I hated sitting still for that.

My mother used old stockings cut in strips to wrap the hair around. Leave about 3" at the top and after wrapping around the stocking roll the roll the hair up. Using and top 3" and what is left at the bottom usually about 3" tie into a knot! Next morning untie the knot, untwist the hair from the stocking and you have long curls!

[QUOTE=gotthebug;4807726]My mother used to do my hair that way. We called them "long curls" I have slept many of nights with those pink sponge "rollers" in my long blond hair. [QUOTE] My mama used this method too, she loved us to have curls.

Yes, I remember those. My hair was very curly as a child and my mom would just twirl a section at a time around her finger and make the curls. I was very young (this was in the early 50's) and loved watching the old Shirley temple movies every Sunday afternoon.

Visits with one of my aunts, she would do my hair this way along with her daughter's long hair. It was one of my favourite treats Loved watching Shirley Temple!

I remember at age 8 or 9, staying with my aunt while my mom was sick, and she and her MIL did my hair in "Banana Curls" (ringlets) - I was very unhappy.

I was just thinking the other day, you almost never see women with their hair in curlers anymore. I wonder why that is? Curling irons?
