Sorry folks, I apologise if I am asking an obvious question. I have only made a lap quilt before and as a newbie without a quilting group in my area, have relied on books for instructions. I am in the process of piecing my second quilt, queen size and am thinking of buying my backing. What exactly is the 'John Flynn' method, please?

5 1/4 yards = 189 inches!!! you do not need that much! 3 1/4 yds would be plenty!
