I agree with Red eagle. I have saved a few vintage pieces and I always use cotton batt, muslin and cotton thread for hand-quilting to keep them in their era.
I also love the idea of that mottled dark gray - maybe you could make a narrow triple border.
I don't know the name of the blocks but they are loaded with personality. I am envious.

It was my experience that black is the perfect sashing color for such blocks - you and others helped me with my same question last week and the quilt turned out beautifully. Mine did not have black in the blocks, but yours does which makes even a better connection to sashing in black. It is going to be stunning when you finish it.

I like the black, but I can see a good muslin, too. Quilts were made by machine dating to the 1800s, so I wouldn't feel it has to be hand done.

Wow, these are great blocks, I am going to print a picture and put it on my idea board, want to play with different fabrics- I can see it in Asians or CW repros, I would audition different fabrics to see which one works the best. I can see these blocks with black or natural muslin, or as someone suggested, yellow - how about yellow or muslin with black cornerstones, or black with yellow cornerstones- or maybe uneven stars as cornerstones, to add extra 'pow!' ? It will be stunning, no matter what you do with it - thank you for showing us these great blocks, such an easy design with such a spectacular result! Don't forget to show us how it turns out, thanks for sharing.

lay the blocks on both and see if you like them that way

Try black first, then dark, dark grey. If you try yellow, take the blocks to the fabric store and audition several hues and tints of yellow. They won't all be equal in their impact.

Yes, I've seen quilts from the Civil War that were done on a machine -- even the quilting! These blocks are sewn by hand but I think I'll use my machine to finish this quilt.
