I inherited a complete stash from someone this summer and vinegar alone didn't cut the smell. It was recommended here to try Borax, so I used that plus a little apple cider vinegar and it worked wonders. The fabric smells wonderful, and even the yellowing in the fabric came out! Highly recommend Borax!

Baking soday works wonders. Sometimes I wash with Washing Soda, it tends to freshen things up.

If one os allergic, like me, Fabreeze would be horrible!
If you make quilts to give away use vinegar, rinse twice, use "free" detergent and don't use ANY thing inwasher or dryer that has a scent.

No need to go out and buy anything expensive. I buy fabric from yard sales/rummage sales all the time and have always had success with white vinegar. Just add one cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle and you're good to go.

    Good luck.
