Kona black always seems to be the "blackest" of all the black boardcloth fabrics out there. My first choice.

I find that with lots of colors. I had 6 or 7 different shades of gold, couldn't tell until I put them together. Same with browns, blues, green, reds and so on.

I agree with Lori S. For so many years Kona black was THE go to black because it was (IS!) so saturated it almost looks like patent leather. I still love it most.

The same thing happens with navy blue. I used to buy a lot of office clothing from Lands End (when they still made nice professional clothing) and they had a guarantee on certain items that if it said "navy" it would match in sweaters, skirts, jackets, pants, etc. and if it said "midnight navy" same deal. It was so helpful.

I am a BIG fan of Michael Miller black. Not sure if it is broadcloth or not. My LQS said it is VERY consistent from bolt to bolt. She also said KONA black was also good BUT can vary from bolt to bolt so better to buy the whole bolt.. Just an FYI

I did not know this when I made an Amish type quilt with a lot of black fabrics. After I finished it I realized that the blacks were all different shades. But when I looked at it the next time, I saw that the different shades gave it a little "life" to it. Sure, not like a traditional Amish quilt, but I am quite pleased with the outcome. Buying the same fabric from the same mfg will also have shade differences, but again I like the slight variation. It's hardly noticeable if it is a print, but the subtle change really peps up the quilt. In another quilt, I needed 9 different shades of solid grey, 3 light, 3 mediums, 3 darks. It was a matching nightmare to get them all to play together well.

I had to go to three different stores to find a black close enough to what I needed to finish a donation quilt. Fortunately I had a piece with me to check to see if it was the correct shade. I have never purchase an entire bolt but may to that in the future just to save the trouble.
