I had the same problem quilting while making the fabric boxes that have been so popular.
Increasing stitch length & using walking foot did not help at all. But it did not really show too much when done.

Thank you for all of your ideas.
I will see what works best on the next one. I prepped 3 and started this post after the first one in the hopes I can fix it for the next ones.
These were very popular before Christmas for gifts, but had to stop selling them on ebay because I couldn't keep up fast enough. Now it's time to get them stocked up again so I can start selling them again and have a nice stock for next year.

Do not cut your pieces out until after you quilt them, cut them bigger to allow for shifting of the batting. Use your walking foot, longer stitches, and sew one direction them the other to keep things in line. Hope some of our hints will help. Love the mitts.

It WORKED!!!!!
I raised the stitch length to 3.0 and lowered the tension from 3.5 down to 2.
I may try a little more tweaking, but at least I'm on a great roll !!

Are you using a walking foot? If not, that would sure be a big help.

I use fusible batting for small projects like this. No shifting at all. If I don't have fusible batting I use Stitch Witchery interfacing or other double sided fusible interfacing.

I also would lessen the tension on the presser foot (if possible). If not possible then I would try to do less quilting and maybe use insulbrite instead of double batting thus making the layers not so thick and it should feed thru the walking foot easier.

Yes, piepatch, I do use a walking foot.
I use Insul-Brite as the bottom layer. I do need a total 2 layers of batting because the Insul-Brite is not enough to hold on to pans very long.
My second layer is a polyester felt. It's thicker than flannel or interfacing.
It's layered as: Cotton design fabric, Felt, Insul-Brite, then backing cotton fabric on the bottom
