I just looked at the book you recommended. Really good book, and available on kindle too ;-)

Another alternative would be to get Electronic Quilter (EQ7). This will let you design blocks, clone them and then play with the layout. You can also just use a draw or paint program, but it's a bit more fiddly than EQ7.

I'd also look on Etsy and Pinterest. Lots of ideas. Of course these are just pictures, but most you can figure out.

This idea might not help, but for a very little money, get an inexpensive viewer (?). You can look and see just how a block, multiplied many times, would look and decide, maybe, if you would like it.

Block Fab is a great app for smartphones and i-pads and it is free. Choose a block and see different settings and it will give you fabric requirements and cutting directions.

I just requested a preview on my Kindle for the book to see if I like it, if so I'll get it of not I'll come up with something for a QAYG using different sized blocks.

PS I'm secretly hoping I like it so I don't have to use my head so much..like my grandson says..."this is making my brain hurt"

You might like to try the 'Pattern Playground' on this sight. It totally uses HSTs, and boggles the brain after a while.
