I like the rectangle shape - because I can put a mug on one side and a brownie or "several" 
cookies on the other side ! But it is all individual taste.

I think the rectangle format lets you make better mini quilt designs, but I do think that if I gave rectangular mug rugs to my non-sewing family without an explanation of a mug rug they would be confused as to the purpose of it.
