I use to be in completion and I never noticed that the diagonal seams were winners over the straight seams in borders. I always cut my borders first so they were from one length of fabric. There is a lot of waste with making diagonal seams if the border is wide.

I'm cutting 5" borders with plain black fabric & there really isn't a lot of waste using the diagonal join... only 2 triangles that yield a 2 ½" square for a scrappy later...and then 2 little dogs ears to throw in the pet bed bag. I prefer the look of a diagonal join, I don't know that one is better than the other, just personal preference.

I join both my borders and binding with diagonal seams. If I have a long sashing strip that needs to be pieced, I also use a diagonal seam.

It depends. In general if the border is 6 inches wide or less, I use a diagonal seam. If it is more than that I use a straight seam.

if the border fabric is directional/striped fabric, or I happen to have enough yardage(3 yards or so of border fabric), then I cut the border the full length as one solid piece.

If I can make it a design element, I'll add a spot of interest where I need a seam. Maybe, extending the central design into the border, or a special block in the border. I join with diagonal seam and match the pattern.

I piece most of my borders and always use a bias/diagonal seam. For the most part you can't even see the seams unless you get up close.
