    It depends. I have stitched around big blocks and meandered inside them. But on some I just start in the middle and work out.

    I spray baste my quilt sandwich then use safety pins. I start my FMQ from the center and work
    outward. I just have fun and ignore all the "rules of the quilt police".

    I do some random SITD on batting and top before I baste the quilt sandwich only on the larger quilts and baste from the back. After struggling with a couple larger quilts I just decided to try that and it works for me. For table runners and smaller projects I don't do that.
