How about the alphabet? Different sizes, shapes, items representing each letter.

Do you have an embroidery machine? Anita Goodesign has some really beautiful mix and match quilt squares and rectangles that are called "Fairy Tales" that are easy to stitch, and are gender neutral. You can check the designs out on their website.

All the animals in this quilt appear to be farm/domestic animals. How about doing wild/zoo animals for the next baby?
And, most of all, congratulations on both of them!

Since you don't know the gender yet, hHave you thought about an alphabet quilt with pictures for each letter? Someone made an alphabet wall hanging with pockets by weaving yarn though the plastic squares. She made an item using the same method for each letter and had these in the pockets. It was just darling. This was at our local Fall Fair last weekend.

I saw a pattern that has elephants trailing behind each other in various sizes and loved it. Elephants work for either sex. Why not find something suitable that is not gender-specific? You could take your time and create something wonderful!

You could do puppies and kitties, or teddy bears.

I suggest a mix of traditional boy/girl appliqué. In today's world, children can grow up to be what interests them beyond their traditional gender roles.

    A B C's are always good for a child's quilt!
