You know, my slow thinking mind just realized that maybe the US requires some kind of treatment on fabric from other countries to protect our crops from infestation.

It lingers for years, so be sure you like it before using it on cotton balls in your fabric stash.
A lot of insects will eat any natural fabric. Here in the south we have weevils. They'll eat anything. I have never had problems with them eating my fabric, but it could probably happen depending on your location and your house.

I wonder if insects dislike the smell of laundry products - detergent, soap, bleach, fabric softeners, and/or dryer sheets?

The article mentioned for the manufacture of cotton fabrics - I had no idea so many chemicals were involved.

The Original Poster does have a very good question - how many of those chemicals/treatments stay on the cotton fibers?

I know that "permanent press" stays on for a while after washing.

Does washing actually remove as much "stuff" as we thought it did?

An information session was given recently by the Quilting Treasures fabric company. After the fabric is printed and before shipping it anywhere, they give it a hot water bath. Viola' already preshrunk an no worries then about bleeding. It was an eye-opener about how current fabrics are made. One of our quilt stores hosted the event.
To the original poster/question: Insecticides are not something I would want inside my home.
Bear: roaches LOVE powedered laundry products, cardboard, paper, among other things, and they have been around a looooonnnng time!

Edited to add: I have no connection with the company mentioned.

I have read that bugs like to eat starch and not to store fabrics that have been starched. I think of that every time I fold and store something that has been starched. However, I never wash the starch out, and I have never gotten bugs in my fabric (knock on wood). I live in dry Colorado though.

It's weird, but they do. Liquid detergent is my friend!

New clothing and linens have the same chemicals. It's amazing how many don't wash young children's clothes before they wear them.
