Someone on this board designed and made blocks representing various aspects of her parents' lives - right now I can't remember who did it.

The Quilting Board Articles that came out today has lots of information about using pictures on fabric - "Photos to Fabric". Check it out.

Hobbycat, yes, I think a wall hanging will be best. I might do more than one as they could be a bit heavy with the bits on. Perhaps one for when they were young and a second for later as a family after I arrived!
Mkotch, thanks for the photo, it helps me to see how the badges might fit on.
My winter project this year I think!

For our 40th anniversary, I made a quilt like what you are saying for my husband. Each block represented a special activity or occasion of our years together. We will soon celebrate our 47th, and he still sleeps with his quilt every night. Some blocks are t-shirts, some fabric, some applique. There is his Navy patch. Our two state flowers fabric is used in the windmill block. I created the blue Miata and stitched it to scenic background fabric. The American Bittern is also appliqued to two different background fabrics to represent the marsh where we saw the bird. If you have any questions I'd be happy to help. Here is a photo:
