With similar concerns, I used a very thin batting to stuff my appliques and then I quilted through all layers. This one gets to stay with Grandma until the grandbundle is a little older.
edit: I do the sew two pieces together, slash the back and turn method. I used a very light weight soft batiste type fabric for the back.
Hand work is not my strong suit, you can see my visible thick stitches but machine applique with tiny stitches is too hard on my eyes. I can do a big thick solid visible stitch, but not a neat non noticeable stitch like so many people can do.

As for alternative black fabric, my go to is always marshall dry goods dream cotton. I just did a huge applique in the center of a quilt. I used a glue stick and turned the edges under, then I dabbed glue and placed the applique. I slowly stitched the perimeter of the applique with matching thread till it was down and flat. I am quilting this now..I will quilt a bit in the applique itself to avoid it bubbling up. In your case, you can stitch a line for the legs, waist band, etc, till there's enough of it stitched that it won't bubble.

I use a light fusible stabilizer and a dark colored printed black on black fabric for the silhouette. The light batting that Iceblossom suggested is how I have done this kind of applique on a couple of baby quilts I made a few years back ago. On the silhouette I would carefully outline the inner outline of the boy. Not to much detail just pant legs arms to shirt that kind of thing just enough to stabilize the design onto the quilt and not distract from the silhouette. I love your design it is so pretty. I can't wait to see it finished and then see what you have decided to do.
