    You are correct.

    Maybe make the background pieces with the 1-inch (finished) squares surrounding the larger background squares. Then do the applique.

    Then join each of those blocks together - then the pattern would only require an outside border of 1-inch squares with the addition of the larger pieces as the outside border.

    I love how the applique goes over the edges. One way to deal with this is to do the bulk of the applique and finish off the overlapping bits at the end.

    I am working on a Dresden plate quilt, and had to make the background as one big piece before appliqueing any of the plates on it, as they overlap all over the place (and each other too,)
