    Both of the 180's I have have needle down. I just looked it up and your 170 should have needle up and needle down. Its the top white button on the left of the block of buttons with little up and down arrows.

    Yes the 170 allows you to choose needle down...but it is not automatic upon startup. I find it amusing that a machine made for quilters has needle up as the default!

    I've never had a machine that has a needle down default so I don't much care about that.

    Patrice, I still have my 150QE and would never part with it! Glad you got a 180. I heard they're great machines.

    Thank you. I've always loved my 180. If the original one I had doesn't reboot, I may be looking for another!
