The sailboat project I'm working on now I ordered fabric online from Hancocks. It was on sale so I ordered everything at one time.

I by the fabric for the top all at once, to include the borders most of the time, but I get the backing fabric when the top is done.

I just buy fabric and then the pattern calls to me. I get to shop my stash it took me about a year to really build it up I didn't know how much I needed a stash until I met this board. Now it needs me to grow it!!! I have yet to buy a pattern then buy fabric.

I just hoard fabric and when I go to make something I "shop" in my stash. Usually I have to buy a bit for borders or sashing or whatever, plus backing of course.

Sometimes I buy all at once and others I just don't know for sure what quilt will look like so buy borders later. Backing usually gets bought when I am ready to quilt, Ilike to look for wide back so don't have to piece.
Right now I am working on a quilt for parents bed. It is all done in blue batik, so I am buying as I go. Almost ready for border and I think I have some of every blue batik in town but not enough of any. Just might have to buy more of some or make a pieced border. Any ideas for pieced border?

It depends. If I am using the border as inside the quilt then I will try to buy all fabric at once except for shashing if needed. If using shashing then I wait until the blocks are done and then find shashing that looks goods or matches my color scheme. I am not very picky about the backing. It is not my main focal point in my quilts so I often choose backing last and make it plain and then use machine quilting as interest.

I'm not usually that organized. I often decide on my backing and borders and binding after the quilt is done.

I may have an idea in mind (like I want a small print in navy for a border), but don't necessarily buy it before I make the quilt.

Well, right now I'm shopping through my dear departed Mother's scraps. I have to supplement here and there. Figured out her favorite colors were green and pink. Of course, I've only been through 2 boxes, so there could be another favorite color waiting to be discovered!
