I cut the tails up to the first knuckle of my index finger.

I figure that before we had these jazzy rulers people used something to measure. When I hand hem something I use my thumb width as a measure for spacing the stitches and my little finger for baby dresses.

I measure a yard of fabric from my nose to fingers. That can't work for eveybody can it? LOL

What I haven't been able to find out is how short/long do you cut the "tails" after tying? Is there an average? Right now mine are about 1" - 1 1/2"
Also, my batting said it could be quilted up to 10". My ties are about 4 1/2" - 5" apart. I was thinking tied quilting needed to be a little closer, so do you think this is ok?
Rough measure--distance between knuckles on index finger left hand------------or 1" more or less

    And about 5-6" apart
