    Hope you don't mind, I have a suggestion....instead of sewing straight off to the outside edge when you get to the end of the triangle, why not turn the unit and back stitch to the edge at an angle like in my image. You could also start sewing the triangle the same. Start a little more than a qtr in. and sew up in the direction of the angle you would trim the dog ear. That way you wouldn't have any problem with the triangle point getting pushed into the feed dogs.
    I have marked up you image to show what I had in mind.
