Check out Bonnie Hunter's site for using scraps (lots from shirts) for quilting. She has lots of free patterns and tips
    for actually using shirts.

No one seems to have mentioned remnants. I haunt the remnant rack at Joann's. Pieces are 50% off regular price and up to a yard in size. If you like scrappy, and I do, remnants are great. Or over time I often pick up several pieces of the same fabric and have enough for non-scrappy quilts.
Also, your LQS may have a sale room with fabric at a significant discount.

    Another good source is http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/
They always have brand name quilting fabric in the sale section beginning at $3.99/yard. Many fabrics $4.99 or $5.99/yard and lots of batiks at $6.99/yard.
If you sign up for their email, you will find sales along the way offering 20% off purchases, including the sales section. That's when I add to my batik stash.

FYI: thepatchworkco.com is having a internet only 50% off sale for their 6th birthday. You have to enter happy at checkout for the discount. I've purchased fabric from Fran many times, great customer service. She has plenty to pick from and half off is great. Sale ends February 6

Click on HOME. You will see the different forums on this group. You will see Main, Pictures, Vintage.... Just scroll down until you see Items for Sale. Click on that and you will see the different listings. The threads are CLOSED for Comments so you can only contact the seller by clicking on their name and sending a private message to tell them what you want. They will answer you back through a private message also. This is for everyone's safety to prevent paypal addresses or personal payment information from being out there for every one to see. If you have a special need, you may also contact me or any other seller to see if they might have something in their stash. Thanks so much. #1piecemaker

Check with local quilt guilds - one of our local guilds does an annual sale of donated fabrics that is DIRT cheap - $2/lb! That's practically free.

If they don't do any sales themselves, some of the guild members might know where to find good deals in your area.

You've found another challenge of quilting.....the cost of fabric, thread, etc. In addition to the suggestions everyone has provided, be on the look-out for sales. Always on the look-out for sales. And communicate with your LAQ store owner.....I know they want to stay in business and most of them also have a passion for quilting and want to encourage others. So, find out when they have their "clearance" sales and definitely look in that "back room" where they have sale fabric.

When going to a new quilt store (while traveling), I have 2 standard questions......
    1- where is your restroom?
2 - where is your sale fabric?

It's kind of a challenge, but it's enjoyable to seek out bargains, etc.

Good luck, keep quilting and try to "never pay full price"!

There are many, many on line shops with sales & different price ranges. Also coupons for JoAnn fabrics. Shop around. I've been shopping with fabric.com for 15+ years happily. They have some good sales & free shipping at $35. There are many more on line too
