    I just want to add a trick I use if I am doing a straight line diagonally across a larger block, say 5". I stretch the thread across and eyeball where it will hit in the middle. Then I stick my needle in and wiggle it to make a (temporary) hole in the fabric (really just pushing threads aside). Then I aim for that and I am halfway there.
