I would suggest that you make up some practice kits of what you are wanting to do. Call your local shops and ask if you need a appointment to come in to try out machines. A good shop will welcome you to a play date. Try out the machines doing the stitches, etc that are most important to you. If you find a machine that works best ask if you can do a rental for a few days. When you buy see if they will do a trade in on your lemon. Remember you can also wheel and deal some on prices.
