Shirley Temple curls
#31
Same result, but I spent my childhood in 'pincurls.' I remember there were a couple of kids in my grade school classes that used to put their fingers in my curls. (I'm 53)
I was a good kid, if Mom did it, I thought it was the right thing to do, so I had no problem with it. But I do have proof - my first grade school photo!

Curling Hair
I am in my 80's and was wondering if any of our older quilters remember their mothers wrapping their hair in rags for Shirley Temple curls. I have googled it, but I remember my mother twirling the hair vertically on the rag not what was shown on google. Any ideas???....grandchildren would like me to fancy them up for Christmas. Thanx

I am glad this subject came up. Went to Xmas mass out of town and I saw quite a few little girls in Shirley
temple curls, they looked so cute and brought back memories to me. I was wondering if that fad is coming back. I am 80

I am 62 and remember my mother being a hairdresser for about 4 years before she had me. She used to give me Tony home permanents and I would stand in front of the mirror and cry my eyes out. It always made my hair curl up above my eyebrows. I HATED them and will not get a permanent even today. I must have had an eternal surprised look!!! LOL

Now I am showing my age!!!!! My mother put rags in my hair. They were so tight. My sibs called me carrots. My head hurt so bad by morning I cried. I had long black/ brown curls. Not a very happy memory. I would use a curling iron on my grands, very carefully. I would never submit anyone to the painful old fashioned curls.

I posted previously about my mother using strips of rags to make long curls for me when I was a child. On Christmas when the GKs were here for the day one of them had received a curling iron that makes the long curls. It is shaped like a cone, narrow at the end and bigger around as it nears the handle. Simply amazing.

You and me, too! But the bad part, for me, is that I really got cheated. My mother had naturally curly beautiful black hair. In her high school graduation picture, she had the Shirley Temple curls. But did I get her beautiful black curly hair? Oh nooooooooo ... I got my daddy's straight, fine, blonde hair. But you know, at this stage of my life, when I think of those undergoing chemo, etc., and have no hair ... I don't complain, just thankful to have hair! LOL But, I have always felt cheated when it comes to hair!
