It is beautiful, I love the borders and I think machine quilting is fine, especially since you don't know where it is going. If it were your own, it would be worth taking all the time to hand quilt it.

I think you did the right thing. The machine quilting will help secure the top so that the hand stitching doesn't loosen. As you said, you don't know what kind of use or abuse it will get in the future and machine quilting will help it last. The most important thing is, a beautiful top has been rescued and can now be part of their lives. Well done!
