This is sort of what I was thinking as well. But then ( truth be told I didn't think of cross hatching).

Why does everyone want to put this majestic rooster and his friends in cages?!! I live near a village with chickens roaming, and they're beautiful and free. I hate the idea of confining this handsome gent; please, no chicken wire!

I agree with the suggestion to make photocopies and try out some designs with pencil first, and also agree with the idea that less is more with a stunning work like this. White or off-white/ecru stitching of pebbles and maybe grasses below their feet could look nice, and/or some echoing of the birds themselves, say three lines, unevenly spaced so they seem to radiate from the birds. Either increasing or decreasing width between lines could work.

    That was my first thought.

The border is going to be done in hooked feathers that look sort like rooster feathers...from Sally Terry's book, "Hooked on Feathers."
    I would appreciate any ideas.

Echoing would be great, but what about making cross sections like chicken wire surrounding the rooster as though he were fenced and standing in front of the wire? Just a thought. You could use light grey thread to do this or maybe silver thread to make it look more realistic. Just don't quilt over the rooster. DD did beautiful work on the rooster, and I'll just bet the others are just as great.

I like Mom3's idea, so the chicken wire doesn't come too close to the birds.

I want to thank all of you for looking at this rooster and for your many, many suggestions. I have been reading and trying different ideas on paper and on scrap sandwiches. So far, no final decision. So much time has been put into this project...mainly into the 15 chickens stitched by my daughter...that I'm being very careful. Yes, I will post once I find the right direction. Keep posting new ideas. I'm watching.

Keep it simple so the bird makes the statement. Cross- hatching would look great.
