What a wonderful, unique keepsake quilt. Now I have to go scavenge through my mom's button jar!

I love family buttons. I had a small button box from my mother that I used to play with as a child. For my first grandchild I did an applique snowman Christmas stocking. Family buttons are used for falling "snowflakes" and a decoration on the top of the snowman's hat, as well as around the border at the top of the stocking. Grandbaby number two has arrived. I've just gotten my sewing room set back up -- it was a nursery for these grandchildren for past 10 months, when dad lost a job and the family stayed with us until they could start to get back on their feet. I was at the store today looking for inspiration and fabric for a stocking for the new baby. I'm thinking of doing penguins on this stocking...and, of course, buttons.

I was asked for a picture of the back of the button quilt so here goes. I used smaller buttons, a lot from the menfolks shirts, and store bought backer buttons. Double buttons through all that thickness was a pain!

upper right clear button is bought "backer button" as is used in expensive coats etc.

Looks wonderful, I will have to try making one of them. Never heard of button backers do you just get them at a fabric store?
