Black gets my vote. A dark navy would work also.

The black background is more dramatic.

Wow, I love the block! I think the black background really stands out. I think it would be really neat with a black background with the dragonflies out of bright batiks (but of course, I LOVE batiks!)
As soon as I saw a pic of the quilt, I sent it to my GF. Her DD loves dragonflies and has a dragonfly tattoo on her wrist with her Norwegian (deceased) grandmother's name tattooed underneath of it.
My DS does leatherwork so my GF commissioned him to make her DD a Christmas gift of a beautiful leather wallet with the same dragonfly symbol colored a blue/turquoise imprinted in leather and grandmother's name in tiny letters imprinted below the dragonfly. He is also imprinting in leather Norwegian flowers, the Norwegian flag and her DD name in the selected colors. My DS has it completed, so it should be in the mail soon. If anyone is interested, he can do most anything in leather, just PM me. He is making my sister one with the State of Texas, bluebonnets, yellow rose (of TEXAS), and I don't know what else...

I like them both but the black makes the dragonfly pop

I'm not familiar with this pattern of a dragonfly, but the blue dragonfly on the black background is stunning.

You members are so 'gutsy' in trying this pattern. I love the pattern and will have to try some time.

Gorgeous!! I like the black not only because it makes the dragonfly pop, but also because I think the seams are a lot less visible and therefore less distracting. My eye sees the dragonfly only on the black one; on the cream colored one my eyes are drawn away from the dragonfly by the lines of the seams.

I really need to make something with dragonflies. They're so cool!
