I tried the finger cots before but the eye of the needle kept poking through them.

I use them for my finger tips because I have a bad habit of 'strangling' the needle. I press so hard to keep a grip on them (and occasionally snap them in half) that they make my fingers real sore real quick if I don't use them. Most of my hand sewing needles end up with a slight curve in them. I also use a thimble on my off hand.
